Dryden Central High School Class of 1956 CATCHING UP Where have we been and what have we been doing? Richard Bailey: Work, work, work! Retired meat cutter, but still works two days a week. Has been to China, Russia, Mongolia, is going to Italy, Greece, and Turkey. Judy Carpenter Rice and Ev Rice: Judy graduated from Cortland in 1960 while Ev went to Cornell for a year and then into the Air Force (Russian language school). They spent four years in Germany. Ev finished his Masters at Syracuse and Judy taught. Moved to Maryland 1970 and Ev worked for National Security Agency, and along came son, Andy (who now lives in Florida with wife and two sons). Off to Germany for military language school for two years, then back to Maryland where Judy finished Masters Degree and taught as a resource teacher for gifted students until retirement in 1995 and re-retired in 2002. Ev retired from NSA in 2002. He is currently part-time teacher of applied Russian language. Mary Jane Clark: Spent years working and raising her girls. Is now retired from job as bar tacker in factory. Nancy Cole Couch and Ed Couch: Remodeled Couch family homestead in Etna; after 25 years, sold and built smaller home on Yellow Barn Road. Raised three successful children (all college grads). Six grandchildren. Travel and explore. Volunteer at Dryden Kitchen Cupboard. Ed drives for Gadabout at least once a week. Both retired from Cornell University – Ed, High Voltage Lineman; Nancy, Account Assistant in the Library. Mabel Cooper Tarbox: Has health problems – had major hospitalization a month ago. Had knee replacement a year ago and is doing fine from that. Lost her 42 year old daughter to cancer last year. Connie Corl Capp: Spend summers at Paradise Cove – out of Sylvan Beach on Fish Creek. Come up and visit. Carolyn Dans Harrington: Retired. Worked at Owego Treadway in the Housekeeping Department. Also worked at Trust Company in Ithaca and Ithaca Hospital. Was married for 26 years, has four children and seven grandchildren. Has a pacemaker and other health problems. Life is pretty good otherwise. James DeGroff: Presently runs two companies - basically high tech software, plus manages the building where they also live. Has four children and eight grandchildren. BS, MBA, Army for two years; has lived in Virginia, California and New Jersey. Sailing, gardening, biking, hiking are his fun things – lots of books and travel. Married two times, last one 39 years and still together! Lots of good stories to tell. Larry Ferenbaugh: Works in wholesale farm equipment sales, working for himself - travels to Virginia, Maryland, Deleware, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Married to Maria from Finland. No children. Sonnie Fitts Howe: Retired from IBM 1993. Retired from Ulster Savings Bank 2004, where she was Executive Assistant to the President and two Executive Vice Presidents. Still works part-time in the Tax Department at the bank during tax season. Raised “My Three Sons” and has two granddaughters, “Kate & Aly”, and has a great-grandson on the way! Now divorced. Spends time with golf, skiing, bridge, gardening, traveling, needlework and taking care of her house. Has done some volunteer work and is active in community church. George Foster: Is now retired. Navy 2 years – SeaBee mechanic machinist. Mechanic, had own business for two years. NYS Automotive Facilities inspector, NY DEC mechanic. Married Shirley L. Pond. Has one son and one grandson. December, 1989, had to place wife in Groton Nursing Home; she is still there and does not know him. Elwyna Glazier Lama: Cocktail waitress. Got married, raised four children. Ran a restaurant and worked in the casinos. Got divorced. Sue Gutchess Carver: Accounting – Office Management – retired with 24 years service. Raised five children – got them married off – now has 13 grandkids. Has recently purchased her “back to my roots” retirement home at 55 East Main Street, Dryden. Enjoys traveling, gardening, good food, good friends, but most of all – being retired. Rosalie Hagen Finnerty: Worked nine years at Dryden schools and 18 years at Cornell University and retired from there. Raised two sons and three daughters. Enjoying seven grandsons and two granddaughters, traveling. Last four years, spends six months in Florida and six months in New York. Charlie Hanshaw: Has been married five times and has several grandchildren. Ran own lawn service business in Texas and retired to Mexico on the Pacific Coast. Doris Holl Tinker: Worked at TC3 for 27 years. Retired in 2001 and now subs at Dryden Elementary School. Was busy raising two children and now has six grandkids. Has traveled, showing horses and Holsteins. Mike Hughes: Retired 1998 from Allied-Signal (now Honeywell), worked mostly in air conditioning industry as design engineer and engineering management positions. 1988 Director of Engineering for Climate Master. Has traveled extensively in these jobs, both in U.S. and in Asia and Europe. Married wife Shari in 1982 after divorce from first wife. Now lives on a lake on the border of Georgia and South Carolina. Shari has two sons and one daughter and Mike has two daughters and one son. Enjoys traveling – Alaska, Maine, Vancouver, New Orleans, San Antonio, New York State. Later this year will be going to Bavaria and Switzerland and possibly to Czech Republic. Shirley Hughes Humphrey Burlingame: She and Gene Humphrey were one of the first married couples in our class - they had five children. Several years after Gene's tragic death, Shirley married Bob Burlingame - they have a daughter. Shirley is an avid quilter. She has been on several safari trips, to the western mountains and to Africa. The Burlingames have 17 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Ted Norman: Lived and worked in Hawaii from 1960 – 1988. Prior to that was stationed in Hawaii for three years in the Air Force. Worked at Hawaiian Electric Power Plant as an Instrument Technician and retired in 1988. Since 1988, has raised quarter horses and beefers, but first love has always been ministering God’s word. Is currently a pastor. He and his wife enjoy horses and riding motorcycles, travel and camping. Denny O’Connor Teeter: Attended Antioch College in Ohio, including a year in Denmark. Retired in 2003 as Deputy Commissioner after 20 years with Schuyler County Board of Elections – an almost perfect fit! Previously taught at Cascadilla School, Ithaca, and worked with Friends Committee on National Legislation (Quaker lobby) in DC. Married in 1967 (husband Bob died 1997), has two daughters and now three grandchildren. Lived in Schuyler County for 35 years. Has been active in community (e.g., past school board member, Logan Community Center, Literacy Volunteers, Watkins Glen Writers). Writes Logan column for weekly paper. Other interests include local history, reading, gardening, hiking, politics, correspondence, and is finding it difficult to “cut back.” Leon Olds: Worked on St. Lawrence Seaway, two years in Army, 33 as school bus driver (Dryden School), two years as sub-driver. Drove truck seven years in Myrtle Beach. Has lived in Myrtle Beach for 9.5 years. Has been married 41 years. Florence Petersen: Retired from hospital nursing in Bradenton, Florida, and runs her own business as a consultant providing continuing education to nurses and allied health personnel. Has traveled around the world on her yearly vacations. Sarah Phelix Brown: Retired from Cornell University in 2000 after 20 years in Alumni and Gifts Administration offices. Still works part-time as owner/operator (with husband) of security/building maintenance for several banks and insurance companies in local area. Has been involved in Real Estate Investments – buying and selling properties; over the years has bought and sold 15 properties and owns three at the present time, but is always looking for some good investments. Jean Randall Dempsey: Received her broker’s license in 1968 and started Robert C. Dempsey Insurance with her husband at that time. Their son has bought the business and is doing well. Has four children and ten grandchildren. Joe Rumsey: Worked most of his life in land mobile and marine electronics. Retired in 2001 due to ill health. Married in 1959 and had five children. Divorced in 1976 and moved to Louisiana. From there went to Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Freeport, Texas. For pastime, flew private airplanes. Pulmonary problems have relegated him to a nursing home for the past five years. Richard Russell: Operated his own garage in Ithaca for almost 40 years - retired a year ago. Owns property on a lake in Canada, where he loves to visit. Has four children - two boys and two girls - and grandchildren. Frank Satterly: Retired 2000 – Director of Public Works and Utilities, Village of Groton. Helped to raise three children with wife, Pauline Liddington. Served on many boards – former Mayor, County Board, past President – NYS Municipal Electric Board; still serves as Electric Board Trustee. Plays golf, hunts, fishes, etc. Helped their children with many projects. Is active in community church. Charlie Snowberger: Retired. Smith Corona Typewriter (Personnel Supervisor) for 28 years. Service Master for 11 years as Personnel/Recruiter. Moved to North Carolina with Sandra Alcott Snowberger in 1987 and she passed away two years later. In 1994, married the most wonderful lady whose name is Mary. She lost her first husband in 1987. Raymond Sutfin: Retired. Tool and Die Repair – EPT, Inc. Enjoys hunting, fishing, traveling, partying, etc. Clifford Teeter: 1957-1983: US Army, active duty – Retired. Signal Corp – fixed base communications, 1984-2001: US Army – Civil Service – Air Traffic Control Systems Engineering – Retired. Married, two children, lives in Florida, has traveled extensively throughout the world. Jerry Valley: Married and has two daughters. Has lived in McKean, PA, since 1965. Attended Adelphi, Wagner, Columbia, Cornell and University of Rochester. Is a Professor at Penn State. He does research on ancient civilization spots in South America. He evaluates potential sites for exploration. He travels about six months a year. Linda Weibly Morse: Worked as an Executive Staff Assistant for a Vice President at Cornell. After retirement, she and husband, Lou, moved to Aurora to their lake home where they enjoy fishing, swimming and having the grandchildren spend time with them. They bought a place in Florida and spend the winters there golfing, playing bingo, cards, and shuffleboard (retiree sports!), and, of course, shopping and flea markets are a must. Life is good!
